Blog for the week of February 22 - 26

Greetings Super Heroes!

A new week.. And it sure has been a nice few days... that sunshine mmmmmmmmmmmmm just fantastic!!!! Makes Super Heroes even smile more when it’s sunny!

This week we continue our fight against the bad guys of the world! In order to help us do this .. We will again equip ourselves with more.. Hmmm Powerbars? Nahhhh protein drink? Nah... oh I got it.. More MATH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! yeah!!!

Ok... it’s not what I want to do but what I must do... we are losing to many testing calculators.. Yep.. They are just disappearing.. Not sure where they are going but I have lost to many. So I will not be able to loan out calculators any more.... I would encourage you to go to Fred’s or bi mart and see what they have... remember it needs to have an A B/c button on it.. meaning it can do fractions.

BLOG QUESTIONS: If you do NOT put your name on your answer.. Um I have no way to know that it’s you!! ... I may have Super Hero Powers but ... I still cannot know whose answer it is without a name :( Also, steps on how to post a Blog question are to the right of this blog post.

2nd and 5th Period: This we will be working on multiplying fractions... and maybe .. Just maybe start do divide fractions! This, I think is one of the easiest things to do with fractions! :) Let’s see what you think!

BLOG QUESTION 2nd and 5th Period:
Have you been watching the Olympics? Pretty exciting Hockey game last night! GO USA!! Right now we have 24 Medals: 10 Bronze and 7 Silver.. So #1 how many Gold medals do we have? Germany has 21 medals, #2 how many fewer medals do they have than us? #3 Sweden has 17 less than our total, what is their total medal count?

4th period:  We will be working on integers.. or should I say Mint-egers :) yummy... positive and negative numbers!  Now we are getting into some fun math!

BLOG QUESTION FOR 4th Period:
Iron Man decided to drive across the country in his Audi R8 to Atlanta Georgia - home of the Atlanta Braves, you know to catch up on what the team is doing! When he left (#1) Portland Oregon he went 231 miles on 18 gallons of gas, which he had paid $50.04 for the 18 gallons, how much was one gallon of gas? When he arrived in (#2)Bosie Idaho, he needed 22 gallons of gas which cost him $58.30, how much would, 18 gallons had cost Iron Man? Then he stopped in (#3) Omaha Nebraska, brrrrr and wow so flat! He bought 29 gallons of gas for $80.62, so how much would 18 gallons cost in Omaha? Finally he made it to (#4) Atalanta where he purchased 26 gallons of gas which cost him $74.10 and ... again .. how much would 18 gallons have cost him? I am hoping that you will use the formula for figuring out unit cost that we have been using in class to figure out your answer :)

For the week of February 16 - 19

Greetings Super Heroes!

Well Super Heroes, did you enjoy having Monday off? It’s nice to have an extra day every once in a while! Thank goodness we are done with State testing and district testing... well we do get to do the State test one more time... which I am sure you will all do even better at than this time! Thank you for working so hard and for being serious as you took the test. I want you to feel successful and that you have done your best... that’s all you can do .. .

We made it through the State Math Testing!!! You did great, I know it was long, hard, and there were questions on the test that some of you had never seen before, but I want to say THANK YOU for working so hard, being so serious and doing your best! We will take it again in the spring and I am sure it won’t be as difficult for you!
BLOG QUESTIONS: REMEMBER... take the time to read the WHOLE BLOG question and there is usually more than one blog question for you to answer. Many of you are still not leaving your name on your answer... I delete those... and you’ll have to do them again ... you should have your name, period and answer. If you forget how to post your blog question look on the right side of the BLOG... there are detailed steps for you to follow.

2nd and 5th Period: The 411 for the week - we are going to start adding and subtracting fractions with different denominators.... Again I would suggest talking to your fam about getting a FRACTION CALCULATOR... really they cost like $12 bucks or so... at Freds. We will also be finishing up with our Plastic Survey... hopefully you and the people you interviewed learned something about plastic!

BLOG QUESTION 2nd and 5th Period:
Mr. Rott just loves these Little Debbie Valentines Hearts! Yep.. I have bought up um.. .. a few... ok... maybe a lot... like 14 boxes!! Mmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm but I usually only eat them on Friday night... at least one pack... that means 2. There are two hearts.. Mind you they are small.. In each package.. there are 5 packs (with 2 hearts per pack) to a box. #1) How many total Hearts does Mr. Rott have (remember I have 14 boxes)______? #2) If Mr. Rott eats one box every Friday (which I DO NOT DO!!) What date will it be when he has eaten all of the 14 boxes____?

BLOG QUESTION FOR 4th Period:

As you know the Chinese New Year started on February 14th. To enrich your cultural understanding of China, our Blog question is focused on Chinese money! A key to help you with this is.. When you go from small to large you multiply, when you go from large to small you divide!
COOL SITE OF THE WEEK!

Ok.. So I have watched some of the Olympics... um I am not a big Ice Skate fan, but the skiing was pretty cool.. There are lots of events still to come... and here is the main web page. Surely there is something there that you can check out! Maybe even Curling?? No.. Not anything to do with a curling iron..hahahahahh!

FOR THE WEEK OF FEBRuARY 8 - 12

Greetings Super Heros!

This week all classes will spend time learning about plastic waste and how much plastic we throw away and it’s impact on the world. The numbers are HUGE the impact is HUGE and we really need Super Heros who will make a difference. My hope is that you will develop a better understanding of the impact that even one bottle of water makes. It’s all of our responsibility to make a difference, why not start now?

We made it through the State Math Testing!!! You did great, I know it was long, hard, and there were questions on the test that some of you had never seen before, but I want to say THANK YOU for working so hard, being so serious and doing your best! We will take it again in the spring and I am sure it won’t be as difficult for you!

BLOG QUESTIONS: Many of you ... are not taking the time to read the questions and then send in your answers. I would suggest that you have a piece of paper, a calculator if you need it with you as you do the questions. STARTING THIS WEEK.. If you do NOT do your blog question by Friday, you will receive a MDF and it will count against trips. You may come in early, at lunch, stay after school, get a pass for the Library... there are many options for you to choose to answer the question. REMEMBER you MUST have your name and period on your answer, it is impossible for me to figure out who sent the answer if there is no name.

2nd and 5th Period: This week we will be looking into the use and waste of plastic, but also we will continue with adding/subtracting fractions with common denominators and by the end of the week spending time on comparing fractions.

BLOG QUESTION 2nd and 5th Period:
#1 The production of plastic bags creates enough solid waste per year to fill the Empire State Building two and a half times. How many times would the Empire State Building be filled in 2 years_______?
#2 If every American household recycled just one out of every ten HDPE (recycling code 2) bottles they used, we’d keep 200 million pounds of the plastic out of landfills every year. How many pounds of plastic would we keep out of the landfills every year if each family recycled 2 out of 10 plastic bottles______?

4th Period:  This week we will wrap up percents and start working on ratios.  While we are working on percents and ratios we will also be collecting data on the use of plastic and working on how to use that data.. should be fun!

BLOG QUESTION FOR 4th Period:
Let’s say you and your family are wanting to go out to eat and you have heard Mr. Rott talk about the Iron Horse Mexican Restaurant in Sellwood... so you’re like..
Wow we need to go there ... here is the link http://www.portlandironhorse.com/dinner_menu.htm you are to go ... and choose a meal for each member of your family and then find the sum of the total cost for your family to eat. TOTAL COST FOR MY FAMILY TO EAT ___________. After that you are to figure out what is 20% - which is the customary tip when you go out to eat... and then add that to your total family meal cost. So you have three answers for this weeks Blog question.
#1) Total family dinner cost at the Iron Horse Restaurant______?
# 2) What a 20% tip would be for the cost of your whole family meal_____ ?
#3) The total cost of your family meal including tip_______.

COOL SITE OF THE WEEK!
Plastic WASTE - Here is a site with a lot of information about plastic waste... it even has a counter of how many plastic bags we have used so far this year... pretty cool!! http://yourgreenreview.com/2008/07/the-plastics-wasteland/ it a read... you just might think twice about using plastic water bottles!

 GONZAGA UNIVERSITY MENS BASKETBALL!

GO Zags!! .. Well we played Memphis Saturday and WON! Great game... This is the third time that we have played them and finally a win! Now the Zags have 2 more away games and the rest will be played in the Dog Pound! They almost never lose at home so hopefully the Zags will win the rest of their games.! Next up St. Mary’s (2/11) who is now in first place.. This game will most likely decide the conference champion! GO ZAGS!

As Spidey says each week... Whatever life holds in store for me, I will never forget these words: "With great power comes great responsibility." This is my gift, my curse. Who am I? I'm Spider-man. You too have great power.. Be responsible, you can do great things!

Blog for the week of February 1 - 5

Greetings Super Heros!

I hope that you enjoyed your extra day off as I was slaving away!!!! Starting this Monday, we will be working on the State Math test. This will most likely take 3-4 days. Yes.. incase you were wondering you will get to have homework during the week.. Don’t want you to get rusty, huh!

Remember, relax, trust yourself .. You’re all very very smart... rule out the answers that make no sense and always.. Remember the four steps to solving math problems!
1) Read and understand what your problem is
2) Plan.. How will you answer this question?
3) Solve... yep.. This is where you get to show your work and come up with your answer.
4) Check it.. I know.. You’re busy and don’t really want to check it.. But it’s IMPORTANT!

I am amazed at how many of you were able to get your blog question done, once you received a MDF. It would be great if you could be that motivated without a MDF.. Huh??? Please remember that your blog question answer is due each week by Friday at midnight. There is always a way to use a computer at school if you do not have access to one at home! Don’t forget that the instructions on how to post a blog question answer are on the right side of the blog...

2nd and 5th Period:
BLOG QUESTION 2nd and 5th Period:
Lets say you and a few friends are going to New York and one of the sites that you want to see is the Statue of Liberty. To help your trip be even more exciting.. You found these facts about the Statue.. The Statue came over on a ship from France in 1885 on a ship named, “Isere.” Before the Statue of Liberty could be set up, a base had to be made which consisted of 27,000 tons of cement and was 53 feet deep and 91 feet square at the bottom. The walls above water were 8 to 19 feet in thickness and 43 feet high from the bottom of the stand to the top. The Statue of Liberty stands a total of 305 feet tall and weights a total of 450, 000.
If you and your best friends go on a tour of the Statue of Liberty and you all decided to climb the 354 steps to get to the top of the Statue what would happen if....one of your friends only went half way.. #1 how many steps would she have climbed _____. #2 What if another friend started out and twisted his ankle after going up 2 dozen stairs.. how many steps would he have climbed before he had to go out____?
#3 And then.. one of your friends was so excited that she went another time.. How many steps would she have climbed____?

BLOG QUESTION FOR 4th Period:
Today, Americans generate 10.5 million tons of plastic waste a year, but we only recycle 1 or 2% of it.. How much out of the 10.5 million tons do we recycle?

It is estimated that 14 Billion pounds of trash, much of it plastic, is dumped in the ocean every year. Take the number of years that you have been alive and figure out how many Billions of trash has been dumped into the ocean since you were born? (In the USA a billion is 1,000,000 000 and a trillion is 1,000,000,000,000 so a trillion is a thousand times a billion.

If a plastic cup can take up to 50 - 80 years to decompose... estimate how many plastic cups do you think you throw away a year and how long it will take for those cups to decompose.

COOL SITE OF THE WEEK!
Plastic soup - that is what the plastic waste is called (The size of Texas) that is floating in the ocean. Here is an article in the New York Times ttp://www.nytimes.com/2009/11/10/science/10patch.html Give it a read... you just might think twice about using plastic water bottles!

GONZAGA UNIVERSITY MENS BASKETBALL!
Zags oops.. Were on a role.. That is until Saturday night when they lost to University of San Francisco... what a sad game... errrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr... So now they are tied with St. Mary’s for first place.. Both teams have lost one game... they play St. Mary’s on 2/11. That will be a HUGE game! GO ZAGS!

As Spidey says each week... Whatever life holds in store for me, I will never forget these words: "With great power comes great responsibility." This is my gift, my curse. Who am I? I'm Spider-man. You too have great power.. Be responsible, you can do great things!
