Class Notes 4th Period Dividin Fractions and Converting Decimals to Fractions

Dividing fractions and turning decimals into fractions.....

Class Notes 1 18 1st & 6th Decimal Place Value

Remember to take time to find the place value of the number you are working with.  The numbers to the LEFT of the decimal point are WHOLE NUMBERS the numbers to the right of the decimal point are PARTS OF NUMBERS.  The decimal point means the word AND.

Blog for January 18 - 21

Howdy Partners!

Has it stopped raining? HOLLY COW... thats long horn cow! I thought I was going to get swept away from the rain and wind Sunday when I went running... WOW! I met a guy years ago... he told me he was from Oregon... at that time I lived hmmm California... and he said he was from Oregon and had webbed feet.. ? Huh? I guess he was joking, or was he?

OLD WEST FACT OF THE WEEK: There’s snow in them there hills!
In the old west times of course ... we know there were not fancy weather stations, or weather reports or even ... the weather channel! Rain, snow, blazing heat... whatever the conditions the job still needed to be cared for. Work was work no matter what the weather was like!
People, horses, cows.. All the farm animals.. Either had a roof over their head or they were stuck in the rain or snow.. Even the heat!

So what about the weather here.. How much raid did we just get over the weekend?
1st and 6th Period:
Well cowboys and cowgirls.... A quick rodeo with decimals and then its on to turning fractions into decimals... its like steer wrestiling... grab those horns and hang on!

1th PERIOD BLOG QUESTION:
Talking about weather... it sure seemed to rain a lot!
#1) On Sunday, Portland received 0.68 of rain fall. Usually Portland receives 0.16 of an inch of rain. What is the difference between the amount of rain from Sunday and what the city usually receives?
#2) So far this month Portland has received 3.38 inches of rain. What is the place and value of each of these numbers?
#3) If for the whole month of January Portland has received 3.38 inches of rain, how much had fallen before Sunday? If you subtract 0.68 from 3.38 you will find out!
4th Period:
Howdy there ... young cowpokes! You did great with turning fractions into decimals... but tisk tisk... decimals also like to be fractions...Yippie! So we will be turning those pesky rattlesnakes decimals back into fractions!

#4) Going to this link Christchurch New Zealand what is the annual yearly rainfall for Christchurch? Newberg’s yearly rainfall is about 43.62 inches of rainfall... what is the difference between the rainfall at the Burnham School and your school?
#5) Which months are the warmest in New Zealand compared to our warmest months (see the info/weather link for Christchurch)?

There is a school in Christchurch New Zealand who emailed our class last year. I follow their blog and thought I would introduce you to them.. Their address Room 6 Room 7 this covers the same grades as Mt. View.

Howdy Partners!                    GO DUCKS GO DUCKS!

Brrrr cold weekend... It looks like it is supposed to snow on Tuesday and even Wednesday! Hmmm I guess I will have to give you lots of homework on Monday to make up for those possible missed days! That seems like a rootin tootin rodeo idea! Yippie!! I hope you had a great weekend and you were able to get things done - like clean your rooms - and had time for some fun!

REMEMBER THE BLOOOOOOOG!!!

OLD WEST FACT OF THE WEEK: Windchill, Frostbite and Hypothermia

In the old west the cowboys and cowgirls did not have North Face jackets or Ugs for their feet to stay warm. They were always in constant danger of frostbite and hypothermia! In this Old West Fact you will learn about... those three topics and perhaps they will help you some day!

The wind chill temperature is how cold people and animals feel when outside. Windchill is based on the rate of heat loss from exposed skin caused by wind and cold. As the wind increases, it draws heat from the body, driving down skin temperature and eventually the internal body temperature. Therefore, the wind makes it FEEL much colder. If the temperature is 0 degrees Fahrenheit and the wind is blowing at 15 mph, the wind chill is -19 degrees Fahrenheit. At this wind chill temperature, exposed skin can freeze in 30 minutes.
Frostbite: Frostbite occurs when tissues freeze. This condition happens when you are exposed to temperatures below the freezing point of skin. Frostbite damages tissues due to freezing with the formation of ice crystals within cells, rupturing the cells and leading to cell death.
Hypothermia: The body maintains a relatively stable temperature whereby heat production is balanced by heat loss. Normally, the core body temperature (when measured rectally) is 98.6 degrees F or 37 degrees C. When the outside environment gets too cold or the body's heat production decreases, hypothermia occurs (hypo=less + thermia=temperature). Hypothermia is defined as having a core body temperature less than 95 degrees F or 35 degrees C. Hypothermia symptoms usually begin slowly. As you develop hypothermia, your ability to think and move often become clouded. In fact, you may even be unaware that you need help. As your thought process is impaired, you fail to realize that you are becoming colder. Once you get cold, it can be very difficult to get warm again. Someone with hypothermia is likely to have frostbite as well.

Hypothermia symptoms include:
-Uncontrollable shivering (although, at extremely low body temperatures, shivering may stop)

Weakness and loss of coordination

-Confusion

-Pale and cold skin

-Drowsiness –especially in more severe stages

-Slowed breathing or heart rate
1st and 6th Period:
This week cowpokes we will move from fractions back to decimals and changing decimals to factions... and then back again! Included in this is a little more on dividing decimals... but in the end fun was had by all! :)

1st PERIOD BLOG QUESTION: SEE THE OLD WEST FACT OF THE WEEK and this link
Windchill Chart

1) If the wind is blowing at 35 miles per hour and the temperature is 20 degrees out what is the windchill?
2) If the wind is blowing at 35 miles per hour and the temperature is -20 degrees out what is the windchill and how long can exposed skin be outside until it suffers from frostbite?
3) What do you think you could do to help yourself not get frostbite, or suffer from hypothermia?

4th Period:

Howdy there ... young cowpokes! Now that we have become experts at dividing decimals, um maybe we will spend at least one more day on those pesks, then its how to change those doggies into fractions and then back again... talk about a cool Transformers movie! Wow!

4th & 6th PERIOD BLOG QUESTION: SEE THE OLD WEST FACT OF THE WEEK and this link

1) If the wind is blowing at 35 miles per hour and the temperature is 20 degrees out what is the windchill?

2) If the wind is blowing at 35 miles per hour and the temperature is -20 degrees out what is the windchill and how long can exposed skin be outside until it suffers from frostbite?
3) If it was windy outside right now and it was roughly 15 to 25 miles per hour and you looked outside at the thermometer and it read 0 degrees what would the actual temp be factoring in the wind?
4) I took Sam my super dog for a run on both Saturday and Sunday.. The temp on both days was near 32 degrees. First what is so special about 32 degrees_______? And Second, if his core body temp was 100 degrees and it dropped 5 degrees - what would his new temp be_____ and what (like humans) could start happening to Sam if his body temp drops________ and what would Sam most likely be suffering from__________?
5) Why is it dangerous if its windy and you are out in the cold - very cold weather_______?
6) What can you do to prevent any of the Old West Facts problems talked about above____?
