Yippie ye yeah! One more week until spring break! What are you going to do? Ride some broncs? Rope some calves? Ride the bulls? Hopefully we will have nice weather and you will be able to get outside and enjoy the sunshine... ya can’t play Xbox all day long you know!

OLD WEST FACT: Cowboys and Tsunami?
Well, I doubt the old west cowboys ever even thought, let alone heard of a Tsunami. But you cowboys and cowgirls have heard a lot about Tsunamis’. Just incase you have not learned about what tsunami are I thought we would check out the facts!

I went to the FEMA’s Ready for Kids ( Federal Emergency Management Agency) web site and this is what they had to say, “Tsunami’s are a giant wave produced by underwater movement due to a variety of natural events such as earthquakes, volcanic eruptions, landslides, and meteorites. Tsunamis generally appear in the Pacific Ocean.


"Tsunami" is a Japanese word. Tsu means "harbor" and nami means "wave."


The website went on to say, That "tsunami (pronounced soo-nahm-ee) is a series of huge waves that happen after an undersea disturbance, such as an earthquake or volcano eruption. (Tsunami is from the Japanese word for harbor wave.) The waves travel in all directions from the area of disturbance, much like the ripples that happen after throwing a rock. The waves may travel in the open sea as fast as 450 miles per hour. As the big waves approach shallow waters along the coast they grow to a great height and smash into the shore. They can be as high as 100 feet. They can cause a lot of destruction on the shore. They are sometimes mistakenly called "tidal waves," but tsunami have nothing to do with the tides.”

And that Hawaii is the state at greatest risk for a tsunami. They get about one a year, with a damaging tsunami happening about every seven years. Alaska is also at high risk. California, Oregon and Washington experience a damaging tsunami about every 18 years.

Some other important facts to know: Tsunamis that strike coastal areas are most always caused by earthquakes may occur far or near where the earthquake starts. Some tsunamis can be very large the height of them can be as great as 30-100 feet, and can travel inland several hundred feet. Tsunamis can strike all low-lying coastal areas and travel up rivers and streams that lead to the ocean. Tsunami are made up of a series of waves and the danger from one can last for several hours after the first wave comes ashore. Sometimes a tsunami can cause the water by the shore to come back, exposing the ocean floor. Tsunamis have a lot of power and can move boats hundreds of feet inland destroying buildings. Tsunamis can happen any time, day or night and can move faster than a person can run.

What to do if you are worried that we are in danger of a tsunami or about others having to experience one. Here are some great helps from Moms Talk:

First turn off the tv... watching what happened in Japan will just keep the fear or anxiety up!
Next, think about these questions, from one mothers children and her answers:
“Could this happen here?" Yes, it could and that is why we have safety drills at school, etc.
“How many people died?" A lot, but I am not sure exactly how many.
“How did they die, did they get squished or drown?" I am not sure.
“Why do earthquakes happen?" Because things underground deep in the earth shift and move sometimes.
“Could I die if an earthquake happened here?" Possibly, but dad and I work very hard to make sure that you are always safe and know what to do in an emergency.
“Will a tsunami reach our house?" Not likely.

After that we will spend time understanding percents... you want to be a smart shopper right? Well then you better know your percents! Look for the best this week, I am sure you will find it!

Well... Here we go... The Zags are in! Yep they won their conference and as a result of that they will automatically go to the Dance... that means they are going to pay in the NCAA March Madness College Basketball Championship!

It is unknown for sure where the team will play or who, the selection committee makes their choices on “Selection Sunday,” they actually have a name for the day! This takes place on March 13th. With the first four games being played on March 15-16 and then the second round starting March 17th - 18th. The Championship ends on April 2nd - the 4th!
 
Talk about exciting!  Oh and there was nothing better than seeing St. Marys LOSE!!!

Howdy Partners!

Do you think we have had enough rain yet? Remember how nice and green things are this summer and the rain will be a thankful memory... who wants dry ugly trees or hills? The year continues to move along... and move a long and move along... we are in the middle of march.. Well ok pretty close to it! Before you know it youll be relaxing during your Spring Break! Keep pushing yourself, study those notes and work hard!
OLD WEST FACT: Cowboys Hats!

One version goes back to the early 1800's, and that the cowboy hat evolved from the Sombrero.

The story goes that cattle herders, arriving from the East to work on the plains, adopted the sombrero and remodeled it into the cowboy hat that is still currently worn today.

So, the first "cowboys" were the Spanish/Mexican herders of the Southwest. The favored hat of the Mexican vaquero was a broad rimmed hat with a high peaked crown, many times decoratedwith design stitching. The size of the largest brim was 30 galleon, which the new cowboys from the East called "30 Gallon".

Today's cowboy hat has remained basically unchanged in construction and design since the first one was created in 1865. As the story goes, John B. Stetson and some companions went west to seek the benefits of a drier climate. During a hunting trip, Stetson amused his friends by showing them how he could make cloth out of fur without weaving.

After creating his 'fur blanket,' Stetson fashioned an enormous hat with a huge brim as a joke, but the hat was noted to be big enough to protect a man from sun, rain, and all the rigors the outdoors could throw at him. Stetson decided to wear the hat on his hunting trip, and it worked so well that he continued wearing it on his travels throughout the West. In 1865, he began to produce the first incarnation of his big hats in number, and before long, Stetson was considered the maker of this newfangled headwear, the cowboy hat. The original Stetson hat sold for five dollars.

Welcome to a new week, a short week. I had great time talking with your parents and those of you cowboys and cowgirls who came out for parent conferences. The weather forcast is for

Snowwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwww this Wednesday and Thursday and I just saw perhaps even Friday.... that would make it a really short week! Hmmmm I figure we have a lot of math to get done so lets hope for NO snow!!! ... ok maybe 1 day!


OLD WEST FACT: Cowboys have to eat!
Here's a look at frontier cowboy recipes and trailside cooking. Did you know that a ranch's cook shack was a private realm ruled over by a cantankerous master cook? He was a permanent member of the outfit and wielded even more power than the itinerant cooks who filled in on western cattle roundups and on the trail. He slept in the cook shack rather than in the bunkhouse, and he made certain the hands showed proper respect - which he sometimes enforced with the broad end of a skillet. The cowboy cook's authority lay in the fact that he provided one of the single most important elements, along with sleep, that a cowboy both cherished and needed. And the food had better have been top notch, otherwise, top hands wouldn't work for such a place.

When Cookie was finished with his work for the day and before hitting the sack, he would always place the tongue of the chuck wagon facing north. When the trail master started in the morning he would look at the tongue and then knew what direction he would be moving the herd.

Chuckwagon Etiquette
-No one eats until Cookie calls
-When Cookie calls, everyone comes a runnin'
-Hungry cowboys wait for no man. They fill their plates, fill their bellies, and then move on so stragglers can fill their plates
-Cowboys eat first, talk later.
-It's okay to eat with your fingers. The food is clean
-If you're refilling the coffee cup and someone yells "Man at the pot."
-You're obliged to serve refills.
-Don't take the last serving unless your sure you're the last man.
-Food left on the plate is an insult to the cook.
-No running or saddling a horse near the wagon. And when you ride off, always ride down wind from the wagon.
-If you come across any decent firewood, bring it back to the wagon
-Strangers are always welcome at the wagon.

These are real recipes from the Old West

BBQ Ribs:

5 pounds pork spareribs

1 cup water

1/3 cup butter or margarine

2 tablespoons fresh lemon juice
1/4 cup dry mustard

1/4 cup chili powder

1 tablespoon granulated sugar

1 tablespoon paprika

2 teaspoons salt

Beffy Beans:

1 1/2 pounds ground beef
1 medium onion, chopped
1 red or green bell pepper, cut into 1/2-inch pieces
1 (16 ounce) can baked beans
1 (15 1/2 ounce) can Great Northern beans, rinsed and drained
1/4 cup tomato ketchup
1/4 cup Heinz 57® sauce
1 tablespoon packed brown sugar
2 teaspoons Worcestershire sauce
In large skillet, cook the ground beef, onion and bell pepper over medium heat for 6 to 8 minutes or until beef is no longer pink. Break up the beef into 1-inch crumbles and pour off the drippings.  Now season the beef mix with 1/2 teaspoon salt and 1/8 teaspoon pepper. Stir in the beans, ketchup, Heinz Sauce, brown sugar and Worcestershire sauce. Reduce heat to low and simmer, covered for 10 minutes, stirring occasionally.

1st Period: Howdy partners! This week we will be working on those pesky fractions, they are as bothersome as a horse fly! But as we mosey on along, we will be converting fractions to decimals and back again! Oh and we have other exciting things planned! It will be a great week.

We have lots and lots of math to cover before the end of the year, I would hate to keep you from your summer cattle drive because you had to stay and learn more math! So pull that hat down and lets get to work! This week ... we will finish our heart project, I hope you have all collected your data. We are also going shopping.. Yep... even Cowboys and Cowgirls have to shop! We will be working on percent of a number... we will see who the sharpest shopper really is!

Howdy Partners!

Well cowpokes, ye all did a rootin tootin bang up job on that old State Math Test. It was a rough and tumble time.. Just like steer wrestilin! I know that some of you felt you should have scored higher but remeber its just like ridin the bull, there is always next time! I’m thinking around April or first of May we will be taking the test again and by then you will have improved and I am sure all of you will do better!

OLD WEST FACT: Black Cowboys


In honor of Black History Month, I thought we would look at the impact of Black Cowboys on the old west!  Black cowboys have been part of Texas history since the early nineteenth century, when they first worked on ranches throughout the state. A good many of the first black cowboys were born into slavery but later found a better life on the open range, where they experienced less open discrimination than in the city. After the Civil War many were employed as horsebreakers and for other tasks, but few of them became ranch foremen or managers. Some black cowboys took up careers as rodeo performers or were hired as federal peace officers in Indian Territory. Others ultimately owned their own farms and ranches, while a few who followed the lure of the Wild West became gunfighters and outlaws. Significant numbers of African Americans went on the great cattle drives originating in the Southwest in the late 1800s. Black cowboys predominated in ranching sections of the Coastal Plain between the Sabine and Guadalupe rivers.

Of the estimated 35,000 cowboys that worked the ranches and rode the trails, between five and nine thousand, (lets say there were 7,000 Black Cowboys) or more was said to have been Black. They participated in almost all of the drives northward, and was assigned to every job except that of trail boss. One historian noted that there had been a few cattle drives where the entire crews were black except for the trail boss.

Bill Pickett was born in 1870 (he died in 1932) to poor Black Cherokees. He left school after the fifth grade to live outdoors and pursue his love of animals. He grew up to be five-foot-seven and weighed only 145 pounds, but his muscles were strong and he glided through the air with incredible finesse. He perfected his riding and roping skills, but Bill Pickett is most famous for his invention of Bulldogging. Bill Pickett, after observing a bulldog take down a steer by biting onto its lip, perfected his technique, which involved jumping from a horse onto a steer and wrestling it down to the ground by biting down the beast’s lip. The bulldogging event became one of the most popular at Rodeo shows. In 1907, Pickett took a contract with the famous 101 Ranch. He worked with Will Rogers and Tom Mix and performed in Rodeo shows all over the world.

1st Period: This week we will take a quick refresher with another look at fractions. We also will be taking our district problem solving test most likely on Thursday. Then Thursday we will be having a Chinese New Years Celebration to start the Chinese New Year and also celebrate finishing the State and District Math tests!

Well... we had Memphis beat... the boys just could NOT make their shots go in! I have to tell you that Stockton kid, he may look small and lacking muscle but NO one on the team energizes the floor like he does. On top of that he is an excellent passer, id say very close to Matt Bouldin... wait till he is a senior wow... will Stockton be all that or what!
