OLD WEST FACT: Trees...

Trees are important to the Old West... just as they are today but perhaps in a little differnt way. In the old west you could not build really anything without wood! So trees were vital... plus you could not plant fields without first removing trees...

Cowboys would use wood to keep warm... build barns, fences... and other things needed on the ranch!

Blog for November 22 - 24

Howdy Partners!

Ok.. So did it snow? Will it snow? It’s Saturday night as I write this and its supposed to snow Sunday night or Monday morning.. BUT, will it be cold enough to snow,  to cancel school?

Now.. it's Sunday morning.... the weather report states that it will snow down to 500 feet and the valley floor.. Hmm so what is the elevation of newberg?

GUESS what .. you will find out beofre the week is over! OH HOW FUN!

I know.. I know...  I said there would be NO blog this week... but with it going to snow... I just have to have a little blog question...but there will be no homework this week! :) how does that sound?

REMEMBER THE BLOOOOOOOG!!!

  OLD WEST FACT: Elevation

What is elevation? A point on the Earth’s surface that is measured relative to sea level. So basically.. It’s how far something is above the ocean... does that make sense? Above sea level... its like Mt. Hood is 11,249 feet above sea level, that is a LONG ways up there!
BLOG QUESTION..........................FOR ALL CLASSES
Mt. Hood
First, make SURE you have read the above Old West Fact... its all about elevation... since it is supposed to snow down to 500 feet above sea level or even lower... I thought we could learn a little about elevatoin! Usually the higher you are above sea level the better chance you have of having snow.... that is why ski resorts are not at the beach, rather they are in the mountains!

Your blog question for this week is.... and try to find where your house is... it won’t be like you can look up the address but... follow these directions and see how close you can get..

STEPS:
A) Go to "Earthtools"

B) On the left under where it says, “Jump to Country.” There is a pull down ... pull that down and scroll down until you find “United States of America.”

C) Then under the “Jump to Country,” click on “Find elevation/Height Above Sea Level.”

D) Click on Oregon and it will ZOOM in... use the cursor to move the map until you get closer to Newberg. Keep using the tool on the left to zoom in untill you can clearly read the area around Newberg.

E) The closer you get the more detail youll see. Now look for your house.. Or around your house.

F) Once you have found near where your hosue is.. Look to the left under the “Earth Tools,” There you will see how many feet above sea level your house is... also how many meters.

G) Answer these questions - #1) How many feet above sea level is your house_________ and #2) How many meters above sea level is your hosue______?

1st and 6th Period:

OLD WEST FACT: Cowboy Boots
Historically horsemen have always needed protective footwear as well as preferring boots with a higher heel. The origin of the cowboy boot that we know today comes from various boot styles including the Wellington boot, which originated from Britain's Duke of Wellington. At the time it was a straight plain leather boot with one-inch heels and straight tops. Cowboys also wore the Hessian boot, which had a V-cut in the front, and some of these had a silk or leather tassel hanging down in the V.

The Coffeyville-style cowboy boots originated in Coffeyville, Kansas around 1870 and were normally black leather with a low Cuban heel. The front of the boot, known as the "graft", was higher than the back and was usually a different color. Texas cowboys were known to have a lone star inlaid in the graft.
Cowboy boots continued to evolve through the late 1800s and the designs were influenced by the European cavalier style of boot, which were characterized by higher heels and better-quality leather.

The toes of cowboy boots were square or rounded and this did not change to pointed until the 1950s.

The straight lines of stitches across the top of the toe of the cowboy boot are called a toe wrinkle. Boot makers in the early 1900s started to add decorative stitching on the toes in addition to the wrinkle and these designs became and have remained to this day the personalized signature of custom-made boots.
